INITIATIVES & COMMITTEES

We will impact students by building relationships and bridges in order to identify and eliminate barriers, and ensure pathways to student success. We will accomplish this by improving communications and acting as a liaison between the students, CCCS, and legislators. Furthermore, we commit to a continued collaborative effort of service and excellence for the benefit of all students.

OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

Open educational resources are freely accessible, openly licensed text, media, and other digital assets that are useful for teaching, learning, and assessing as well as for research purposes. The State Student Advisory Council is partnering with the Colorado Department of Higher Education to explore more ways to bring awareness about OER and increase the amount of OER courses system wide. Currently Community Colleges are at the forefront of OER saving students hundreds of thousands in textbook cost.

ETHNIC STUDY PROGRAMS

With this initiative, our goal is increase the amount of Ethnic Studies System Wide. Ethnic Studies empowers our students with their history while giving them the ability to connect and see themselves in other minority history. Ethnic Studies increase intercultural competence, self advocacy and help students excel in the classroom. The purpose of this committee is to explore the current offerings of Ethnic Studies course work, identify deficits and suggest resolutions

MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES

The purpose of this committee is to research the availability of mental health resources system wide and find ways to implement more initiatives at each campus to better serve students. The State Student Advisory Council looks forward to increasing mental health resources at all colleges in the system particularly the rural ones.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Each year, a Fall Student Leadership Conference is planned by CCCS, the State Student Advisory Council, and Student Life staff from across the System. The conference brings over 100 of our Colorado community college students together to engage in skill-building activities, leadership development exercises, and peer networking opportunities.

This year’s conference theme is: “Everyday Hero – Discovering Your Superpower.” Our goal is to cover the following student learning outcomes throughout the duration of the conference experience: Advocacy & Activism, Critical Thinking, Cultural Competency, Effective Communication, Professionalism, and Realistic Self-Appraisal.
